Counting continues in 6 metropolitan municipality elections in Gujarat. A total of 576 seats in 6 metropolitan municipalities, including Ahmedabad, were cast on 21 February. BJP leads in 315 seats and Congress in 42 seats. In Surat, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has become the number two party in 16 seats. It has pushed the Congress to number three. On the other hand, BJP has won 24 out of 72 seats in Rajkot. She is leading in the trends of the remaining 24 seats.

In ahmedabad 3 candidates of Owaisi’s party lagged behind

  • Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM also fielded candidates in 6 wards of Ahmedabad for the first time. In the initial trends, AIMIM candidates were ahead in 3 seats. We are now behind.
  • Voting took place in 6 metros Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar and Rajkot in Gujarat. BJP won this seat before the completion of elections due to no candidate in front of female candidate Bindra Surti in Narayanpura seat of Ahmedabad.
  • BJP and Congress have given this election more importance in view of upcoming assembly elections. Home minister Amit Shah also reached out to cast his vote with his entire family. Apart from Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, Union Ministers also left no stone unturned in campaigning.

Reason for Congress to move to number three in Surat
This time the Congress is losing more than the 2015 elections in Surat. There are two reasons for this. First, the Congress was opposed by the Patidar Reservation Committee (PASS). Secondly, the Aam Aadmi Party gave tickets to the Patidar candidates and campaigned keeping the same area at the center. This was the reason that the Aam Aadmi Party overtook the Congress here as well. The BJP also did road shows in the Patidar areas, but despite this, the target of winning all 120 seats does not seem possible. In the previous Surat, BJP got 80 out of 120 and Congress 36 seats.
