A new roster of judges’ bench will be implemented from today for the hearing of petitions in the Supreme Court. The court has set different benches for different types of cases. The bench headed by Chief Justice (CJI) SA Bobde, Justice Ramana, Justice Nariman, Justice UU Lalit, Justice Khanwilkar, Justice Chandrachud, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice Nagesh Rao will hear the public interest and petitions. The Chief Justice will also appear on the bench of many other similar cases.

Which type of cases will be heard by the bench?

  • The matters of elections, social justice and the Habeas corpus will be placed before a bench headed by the CJI.
  • The bench headed by CJI and Justice UU Lalit will hear the cases of contempt of court.
  • The hearing of petitions related to religious and charitable (charitable) has been given to a bench headed by Justice NV Ramana, Justice UU Lalit, Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Ashok Bhushan.
  • Arbitration cases have been referred to the benches of CJI, Justice Ramana, Justice RF Nariman, Justice Indu Malhotra and Justice Indira Banerjee.

Four judges raised questions on roster system
In 2018, four senior judges of the Supreme Court accused the Chief Justice of allotting the case by bypassing seniority. The four judges made this allegation in a press conference. Subsequently, the then Chief Justice Deepak Mishra introduced the Subject Vice Roster System in February 2018.
