Cupre is a small town in France. Louis Braille was born here on this day in 1809. The same Louis Braille, who invented the Braille script for the blind. Louis was not blind since childhood, but in his childhood he had an accident and lost his eyesight. Indeed, Louis’s father Simon Rayle Braille used to make saddles for royal horses. He had more work load. So he also employed 3-year-old Louis to help him.
One day while working with his father, Louis started playing with the tools there. An instrument struck his eye. Shed lots of blood At that time, the family treated it as a minor injury and stabbed it. As Louis was growing older, the wound was getting deeper. By the age of 8, Louis had lost his eyesight.
This is how the idea of making Braille script
Louis was 16 at the time. At the same time he met Captain Charles Barbier of the French Army. Charles tells Louis about night writing and sonography. With this help, soldiers used to study in the dark. The script was embossed on paper and based on 12 points. It was from here that Louis got the idea of Braille script.
Louis improved the same script and converted it from 6 points to 6 points. Louis made 64 characters and symbols in Braille script. It also made necessary signs for writing punctuation and music notation. In 1825, Louis invented the Braille script.
Louis Braille said that blind people in the world should be given as much importance as the common people.
In 1851, he developed TB disease, which worsened his health, and he died on 6 January 1852 at the age of just 43. The script was recognized by the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in 1868, 16 years after his death. The Government of India issued a postal ticket in 2009 in honor of Louis Braille. Not only this, on the completion of 100 years of Louis’s death, the French government took out his buried body and wrapped it in the national flag and buried it again with full state honors.
